The Denver Broncos have been plagued by their lack of a consistent running game on the road. The emergence of C.J. Anderson has shown them a glimpse of the possibilities with better balance, however. They hope a more well-rounded attack can help them Sunday night when they visit the Kansas City Chiefs, who are looking to create a first-place tie in the AFC West. You can watch all the action starting at 8:15pm et/5:15pm pt on TSN2. Denver (8-3) ranks 29th with 72.6 rushing yards per game on the road, where it is 2-3 - one loss shy of its total from the last two seasons. While the Broncos have been better at home with 122.8 yards per game, they also committed to the run in Sundays 39-36 win against Miami, recording season highs of 201 yards and 35 carries. Anderson accounted for 167 of those yards and has been much more effective than Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball, who are both dealing with injuries. Anderson is averaging a team-best 5.6 yards per carry and 157.7 scrimmage yards over his last three games. The Broncos struck a perfect balance with 35 runs and passes against Miami. Theyre averaging a 34.3 margin between passing and rushing attempts in their losses compared to a 7.1 margin in their wins. Denver is 1-3 when attempting 49 pases or more, so balance appears to be crucial - even for a team quarterbacked by Peyton Manning. Manning owns a 130.4 passer rating at home with 21 TDs and two interceptions compared to a 91.5 rating with 13 TDs and seven INTs on the road. Obviously, we would rather be running it than passing it, but we have a guy that can pass it pretty good, center Will Montgomery said. So, to be effective in the long run we need to do both, and we can do both. Denvers five-game winning streak against Kansas City since acquiring Manning is its longest since winning eight straight from Oct. 24, 1976-Oct. 28, 1979. Manning was 21 of 26 for 242 yards and three TDs in a 24-17 home win Sept. 14 and owns a 117.3 rating against the Chiefs since joining the Broncos, throwing 14 TDs with two interceptions. He could be without an important weapon again with tight end Julius Thomas questionable after he sat out versus Miami with an ankle injury. Thomas leads the NFL with 12 receiving TDs. The Chiefs (7-4) can pull even with the Broncos with a victory, though Denver would still hold the tiebreaker by virtue of a better divisional record. Theyll likely be playing with heavy hearts after Eric Berry was placed on the non-football injury list Monday after a mass suspected to be lymphoma was found in his chest. I understand that right now I have to concentrate on a new opponent, the All-Pro safety said. I have great confidence in the doctors and the plan they are going to put in place for me to win this fight. I believe that I am in Gods hands and I have great peace in that. Kansas City boasts the leagues best passing defense, limiting opponents to 198.9 yards per game. The Chiefs havent allowed a 300-yard passer in 13 straight regular-season contests. Manning has thrown for 300-plus in six of his last nine. Kansas Citys 31 sacks are tied for fourth in the NFL - including a league-leading 13 from Justin Houston - but the Broncos only surrendered one sack in September. The Chiefs have looked increasingly vulnerable on the ground, giving up 383 yards over their past two games. They allowed 179 yards and their first two rushing TDs of the season in a 24-20 defeat at previously winless Oakland on Nov. 20, including a 90-yard scoring run by Latavius Murray. We werent playing our gaps and its like a high school football game, linebacker Tamba Hali said. Denver signed kicker Connor Barth on Tuesday after waiving Brandon McManus, who missed a 33-yard field goal against the Dolphins to fall to 9 for 13 on the season. Barth, who won a competition with Jay Feely at the teams complex this week, hasnt played since 2012 after tearing his right Achilles tendon during a charity basketball game, though he is an 84.2 percent kicker for his career. Were a performance-based business and regardless of what your job description is youre expected to perform, said coach John Fox, who is 8-1 lifetime against Kansas City. Denvers DeMarcus Ware is one sack shy of passing Chiefs Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas for the 14th-most in league history. Broncos leading tackler Brandon Marshall expects to play after clearing concussion protocol and practicing in full Friday. He was knocked out of the Miami game. Marty Mcsorley Jersey . The Sharks, who had a 3-0 series lead only to see the Kings battle back with two wins, will turn to Alex Stalock in goal. Stalock will be making his first career playoff start. Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi was pulled for the second straight game after allowing three goals on 19 shots. Stalock took over early in the second and stopped all 22 shots he faced in relief for the Sharks, who finished 0- for-5 on the power play. "They werent going to roll over and die," Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle said of the Kings. "They played well. We just have to go out there and win a game." The Sharks are hoping for a repeat of the Game 3 result. San Jose had lost eight straight in Los Angeles before posting that win 4-3 overtime win last Tuesday. A win tonight will get San Jose into the second round for the fourth time in five seasons. A loss means the Sharks will host a decisive Game 7 on Wednesday at SAP Center. The winner of this series will face Anaheim in the second round. The Ducks eliminated Dallas in six games with a road comeback win on Sunday night. The Sharks will be without defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic tonight after he left Saturdays game with an upper-body injury following a collision with L.A. forward Jarret Stoll. Vlasic, who helped Team Canada win gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, did not practice on Sunday. Vlasic averaged 20 minutes, 42 seconds of ice time for San Jose in 81 regular- season games. With Vlasic out, the Sharks expect to insert defenceman Matt Irwin into the lineup. Los Angeles dropped the first three games of this set and are trying to become only the fourth team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven series after trailinng 3-0.dddddddddddd The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1975 New York Islanders and 2010 Philadelphia Flyers are the only clubs to have pulled off the monumental comeback. If L.A. wins Monday it will become only the ninth team in NHL history to even force a Game 7 after falling behind three games to none. Los Angeles does have a few players on its roster that were part of a 3-0 playoff comeback. Kings forwards Jeff Carter and Mike Richards were both members of the 2010 Flyers team that stormed back to beat Boston in the conference semifinals after losing the first three games. Carter, however, missed that historic series with a broken foot before returning later in the playoffs to help Philadelphia make a surprise run to the Cup Finals. The Kings were outscored 17-8 by the Sharks in losing the first three games of this series, but L.A. answered with a 6-3 home win on Thursday before notching a 3-0 triumph Saturday in San Jose. Jonathan Quick stopped 30 shots to secure his eighth career postseason shutout and help the Kings stay alive. After avoiding a sweep withe Kings scored twice in the first period Saturday and added another marker 22 seconds into the second before leaving the rest to their veteran netminder. Quick was up to the task, posting 24 of his 30 saves over the final 40 minutes to force tonights game at the Staples Center. Anze Kopitar, Tyler Toffoli and Carter each registered a goal for the Kings, who had lost their last five playoff games in San Jose before ending the slide Saturday. "We gave ourselves a chance to play another game," Kopitar remarked. "Its a Game 7, obviously, for us again. Were going to enjoy this one tonight and start getting ready tomorrow." Los Angeles hasnt been eliminated in the opening round since 2011, when San Jose beat them in six games. ' ' '
