Last season the 12th-man proved almost impossible to beat, the 11-men that took the field on either side of the ball in front of them were just as tough, and the Seattle Seahawks rode a talented squad and an overwhelming home advantage to a franchise first Super Bowl championship. Only eight champions have been repeat winners of the NFLs ultimate prize and none since New England Patriots knocked off the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles to win back-to-back crowns. Are the Seahawks the right squad to be the ninth team to achieve the feat? At 26.4 years-old, the Seahawks boasted the second youngest team to ever win the championship and that is a great sign for their future success. Quarterback Russell Wilson followed an elite rookie season with an even better sophomore campaign to lead his team to the top. After throwing 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his first year, he repeated the number of majors while lowering his picks to 9 for the season. If that was all there was to say about Wilson and his skills that would be enough, however he also rushed for 539 yards and a touchdown proving to be skilled on his feet as well as with his arm. A healthy Percy Harvin should make for a strong passing game, even if they will have to deal with the loss of both Golden Tate and Sidney Rice at the position. Tate is now plying his trade for the Detroit Lions and Rice has called time on his career, but in Doug Baldwin and his 50 catches for 778 yards and five touchdowns and Jermaine Kearse and his four touchdowns last season, the Seahawks are not going to be short of skilled options in their passing game. In the backfield once again will be one of the most imposing and hardest to tackle players in the NFL in Marshawn Lynch. Last season he contributed 1,257 yards and 12 touchdowns on 301 carries and he also caught two touchdowns out of the backfield. To call these weapons a dynamic offence is probably a major understatement and they might not even be the most talented unit on the team. The Seahawks also boast an incredibly strong, skilled and hard hitting defence, led by talented Richard Sherman who makes tough plays and big plays in the biggest moments. Sherman is the type of player that can erase a wide receiver from an offenses entire plan and he doesnt run the field alone. Earl Thomas is considered to be the best free safeties in the league and along with Sherman has stated his goal to be talked about among the all-time greats of the game. Safety Kam Chancellor is also one of the best at his position and while he might not get the same ink as the other two high profile defenders, was second team all-pro last season so his credentials are nowhere near being in question. The defence did take some offseason hits having lost cornerbacks Brandon Browner and Walter Thurmond III, and defensive linemen Chris Clemons, Red Bryant and Clinton McDonald. This team has survived on a next man up philosophy thus far and there is no reason to believe all of the holes created by those departures wont also easily be filled. The ace in the hole is the rabid fan base that helped the Seahawks to a 7-1 record during the regular season in Seattle and two huge home playoff victories the propelled them to the Super Bowl. Beating the Seahawks is incredibly tough and winning in Seattle is even tougher, those are the ingredients to another top notch, possibly championship calibre season. Corey Knebel Jersey . Sluman and Funk finished with a 6-under 48 at rainy Top of the Rock, the first par-3 course used in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, to beat Jay Haas and Peter Jacobsen by a stroke. Sluman holed a 6-foot par putt for the victory on the final hole. "For some reason Ive always done well in these team-type events," Sluman said. "I dont know what it is." The winners finished at 20-under 159. They opened with an 11-under 61 in better-ball play on the regulation Buffalo Ridge course and had a 50 on Saturday on the par-3 layout. Sluman also won last year, teaming with Brad Faxon in Savannah, Georgia. "Maybe Ive got a good eye for partners," Sluman said. Funk was quick to return the complement. "Hes the common denominator," Funk said. Sluman won for the sixth time on the Champions Tour, and Funk for the ninth. Haas and Jacobsen, the second-round leaders, shot 50. Haas missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole of the day. "Im disappointed because I hit a beautiful iron in there and it was as easy a putt as you can get, straight up the hill, and I just pulled it a little bit," Haas said. "Were mixed emotions right now. Were very happy to have finished second, but we had an opportunity. You just dont get that many, so its nice to take advantage of them when you do. Sluman and Funk had a 1-under 26 in the opening alternate-shot nine and cllosed with a 5-under 22 in the best-ball nine.dddddddddddd "It seemed like they kept hitting it to three feet. The first five or six holes they hit it to three feet and made birdie," Jacobsen said. "Youre not going to get more clutch than those two guys." Craig Stadler and Kirk Triplett closed with a 52 to finish third at 14 under, the Kentucky duo of Russ Cochran and Kenny Perry was 13 under after a 49. In the nine-hole Legends finale, Colbert and Thorpe had a 4-under 23 in better-ball play for a three-stroke victory over Bruce Fleisher and Larry Nelson. Colbert and Thorpe finished at 11 under for 45 holes. Colbert won the then-Demaret Division for players 70 and older, teaming with Bob Murphy. "I couldnt ask for a better partner because I know hes a fighter," Thorpe said. "This guh fight in him." Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were fifth at 5 under. "I think Gary played reasonably well. I didnt," Nicklaus said. "I got worn out yesterday and I didnt play very well and I played very poorly today. I dont think we played particularly well in total. We felt like we could both play better than that, but we just didnt." Sluman and Funk each earned $230,000, and Colbert and Thorpe got $60,000 each. "The tournament was a lot of fun," Funk said. "It was just a real treat. It turned out to be really fun and a real treat to play this par 3. And it is a little nerve-wracking, like yesterday, with the alternate shot because it just seems to put more pressure on you." ' ' '
