ARLINGTON, Texas -- Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer got his only two walks out of the way against the first three Texas hitters. Duncan Robinson Jersey . Then Archer started piling up the strikeouts. The hard-throwing right-hander got into such a groove that he didnt realize he struck out six Rangers in a row at one point in the Rays 10-1 victory Wednesday night. "Its just one of those situations where you get in the zone and you black out," Archer said. "Your hard work and practice takes over." Archer (8-6) had a career-high 12 strikeouts in seven innings and Matt Joyce hit the first of Tampa Bays three early home runs. After those two walks, Archer got out of the first when Alex Rios went down swinging to start the strikeout streak. "When he struck out Rios," I felt a lot better," manager Joe Maddon said. "That was the real deep slider that were used to seeing. I liked that. " It was Archers third career game with at least 10 strikeouts, and two have come against the Rangers. He struck out 11 against Texas in a home game on Sept. 8, 2012, in his third career start. After Joyce homered in the first, Sean Rodriguez and Brandon Guyer hit two-run shots in the second off righty Miles Mikolas (1-5). "I think it was kind of nice to jump out in front with the big hit like that," Joyce said. "The guys seemed to be aggressive with the ball in the zone and up in the zone. Just really driving the ball." James Loney drove in two runs with his three singles for Tampa Bay, which extended its AL record by allowing three runs or less in 17 consecutive road games. Only the 1908 Chicago Cubs had a longer stretch -- 21 in a row. Texas got its run when Leonys Martin had a leadoff double in the fifth and came home on Jim Adducis sacrifice fly. Left-hander Alex Claudio, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Round Rock earlier Wednesday when Rangers ace Yu Darvish went on the disabled list, retired all three batters he faced in his major league debut. TRAINERS ROOM Rays: CF Desmond Jennings didnt play because of a sore shoulder, a night after slamming hard into the wall while making an incredible running catch. Jennings could be back in the lineup Thursday. Rangers: Darvish was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of right elbow inflammation and wont start the series finale Thursday as scheduled. The move was retroactive to Sunday, a day after Darvish lost his last start. INF Jurickson Profar, out all season because of a torn muscle in his shoulder, took some grounders without making any throws. UP NEXT Rookie RHP Jake Odorizzi (8-9) pitches for the Rays, who wrap up a 10-game road trip. Tampa is 5-4 on this trip, and 20-6 away from home since June 15. LHP Robbie Ross (2-4) is set to be recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to start in Darvishs spot. Texas has lost 20 of its last 27 home games. ANOTHER NAME TO THE LIST Claudio, who didnt arrive at the ballpark until about an hour after the game began, became the club-record 56th different player and 17th rookie used by the Rangers this season. He was also the record 34th pitcher, and that became 35 in the ninth when catcher J.P. Arencibia pitched in the majors for the first time, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth. He was the third position player to pitch for the Rangers this year. ALMOST GONE Between the homers by Rodriguez and Guyer in the second, Curt Casali hit a towering drive that hit on top of the 14-foot wall in left field and ricocheted back onto the field. Umpires looked at replay that confirmed the ball remained in play for a double. MUCH LESS TIME A night after a 14-inning game that took 4 hours, 49 minutes to play, the third game of the four-game set was played in 2 hours, 51 minutes. Derrick Jones Heat Jersey . There is plenty of blame to be shared as a result of the most recent NHL player (Pittsburghs Brooks Orpik) to be evacuated from the ice on a stretcher following an ugly incident Saturday night in Boston.Nine players on three NHL teams have contracted mumps this season, an unexpected outbreak that the league and the players association are trying to contain.Ryan Suter recently joined Minnesota Wild teammates Keith Ballard, Marco Scandella, Jonas Brodin and Christian Folin, Corey Perry, Clayton Stoner and Francois Beauchemin of the Anaheim Ducks and Tanner Glass of the New York Rangers to be diagnosed with the disease. Those infected with mumps can have a fever, headaches, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite, followed by the swelling of salivary glands, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league has been in contact with team doctors and training staffs about best practices to prevent the spread of mumps, which has caught everyone off guard. It is certainly an outbreak that was unexpected and has caused unwanted disruption at the team level, but it is not something we have any significant control over, Daly said. As long as our clubs are doing what they need to do to minimize risk of contraction, we are hopeful that the wave of cases will run their course and life will return to normal in the relatively near term.Nine out of some 600 players getting the mumps is not a full-fledged epidemic, but the lack of familiarity about mumps has made it a talking point around the league. As Wild star Zach Parise joked to the Star-Tribute in Minneapolis: What is this, the Oregon Trail? Where are we right now? Every team seems to get the flu once a year, but the mumps? When Perry and Beauchemin were ill and eventually tests showed they had mumps, the NHL/NHLPA joint health and safety committee began working with teams to prevent further spread. The NHLPA has been actively educating the players regarding the recent outbreak, while providing best practices on how to avoid contracting and spreading mumps, spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon said. The mumps virus is spread through saliva or mucus, usually from coughing, sneezing or talking, according to the CDC. Sharing drinks and utensils can also contribute to spreading the infection. Its something were aware of, Vancouver Canucks NHLPA representative Kevin Bieksa said. The PAs addressed it, weve sent out a couple emails with some of the symptoms and some of the warning signs. Most of us haave been vaccinated, so were doing whatever we can to prevent it. KZ Okpala Heat Jersey. The Canucks arent the only ones taking precautions. Rangers coach Alain Vigneault told reporters that his team would be getting booster shots after they found out Glass had the mumps.According to the Winnipeg Free Press, the Jets have told their players not to share water bottles or towels and have been disinfecting dressing rooms when on the road. The first mumps vaccine was licensed in the United States in 1967, according to the CDC. The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine began to be administered in Canada in the early 1970s, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.Originally, one dose of the MMR vaccine was administered to a child aged between 12 and 15 months. In 1989, several health agencies recommended the vaccine be increased to two doses, the second given between ages 4 and 6.The CDC says two doses of the vaccine are 88 per cent effective at preventing mumps, while one dose is 78 per cent effective.Theres no one common theme to the spread of mumps in the NHL, as the nine players range in age from 21 to 34 and are of three different nationalities. Suter (born in 1985) and Ballard (1982) are American; Perry (1985), Beauchemin (1980), Stoner (1985), Scandella (1990) and Glass (1983) are Canadian; while Brodin (1993) and Folin (1991) are Swedish.Even though he got vaccinated, Bieksa acknowledged being taken aback by news that mumps is going around.Obviously when theres a little bit of a small epidemic in the league, you kind of get concerned, he said. We played a lot of those teams (like) Anaheim, when they were going through it.Each new case brings more conversation about the mumps virus. Bieksa knew about the cases with the Ducks and Wild but hadnt heard of Glass getting it.Told the league couldnt anticipate this outbreak, Bieksa said: And rightfully so.
